Simple Homemade Pear Sauce Recipe

Wellness Wednesday, Recipe, FoodAnneke McConnell

Hi friends!  If you're loving the Burgundy trend this Fall, be sure to check out my last post with the best of burgundy style right now. I can't tell you how much I LOVE the color and it truly looks amazing on everyone.

Today's simple homemade pear sauce recipe came out of the need to process a HUGE batch of pears my husband brought home from a recent deer hunting trip to Tonasket, Eastern Washington.  It is the season of apples and pears here in Washington and we LOVE to make dehydrated apples, sauces, etc. for the upcoming months! I'll share more on Instagram. :-)

This recipe is truly foolproof!  The only part that admittedly takes awhile is peeling the pears, so do yourself a favor and have a high quality peeler and corer.  I'm thinking it's about time I invested a nominal amount into an electric vegetable and fruit peeler and get our kiddos set up at stations to speed up the process!

Here's what you'll need:

  • Vegetable Peeler
  • Apple Corer
  • Small knife to dice the pears smaller if you'd like
  • Large Pot for cooking the pears
  • Large Spoon for mixing
  • Immersion Blender
  • Water
  • Fresh Lemon
  • Cinnamon (optional: to taste)
  • And Pears of course!

Directions to make Pear Sauce:

  1. Peel your pears. (about 40-60 depending on the size)
  2. Core your pears with an apple corer.
  3. Dice into smaller pieces, about 1 inch. (optional)
  4. Place the diced pears, half of a fresh juiced lemon, and about a cup of water into a large pot. I used our 8 quart pot.
  5. Bring the pear to a boil, stir and then simmer for about 30-40 minutes with the lid on.
  6. Use an immersion blender to puree the pears. We us this one!
  7. Add the other half of fresh lemon juice.
  8. Add cinnamon to taste (1tsp.-1 tbsp. or so)
  9. Simmer with the lid off until your pear sauce is reduced to your desired thickness.
  10. Enjoy! The more ripe the pears are, the sweeter the flavor!

Fashion Friday: 76 of The Best Scarves for Fall plus 3 Tips to find the right one for YOU!

Fashion Blog PostsAnneke McConnell

Happy Fashion Friday you guys!  Earlier this week on Instagram I had a candid confession about my struggle with style blogging at times amidst those things that matter so much more - many of you were so encouraging and I thank you for that.  It's a fine line, and I hope my hear for people always shows brighter than my love of piecing things together.

It's why my style motto is "Dress for the Occasion". Ours lives are made up of so many facets from working out, to home projects, lounging around, date nights with our husband, or a girl's night out.

With that said, I decided to pull together some resources for you if you're looking for a cute new scarf for this Fall and Winter.  There are a few things to keep in mind when finding the perfect fit:

  1. Determine the Shape: Are you more comfortable in a long oblong rectangular scarf or a big square blanket scarf?  As a petite person, I tried a square one and it completely overwhelmed my frame.  The oblong scarves really allow me to create several looks including long vertical lines to add "height."
  2. Determine the Weight: Are you looking for that war cozy blanket scarf that you'd take off once inside, or a lighter, thinner material that keeps you warm and you can keep on all day. Maybe this is a PNW thing? I'm not sure. Lol
  3. Determine Pattern or Color: What colors do you wear most often?  How about patterns?  I'd suggest going for a scarf or scarves that is within a color scheme you wear often so it goes with multiple outfits.  Also, if you tend to wear patterns, go with a solid colored scarf,. Likewise, if you tend to wear solids, go with some scarves with patterns like classic plaid, stripes, a cheetah print, or even a floral with muted colors, etc.

I find that I personally gravitate toward lightweight striped scarves in the spring and summer and plaid scarves in the fall and winter.  To each their own!

Below are just a handful of recommendations to get you started, but ASOS is probably my favorite place so far to find a large variety of scarves where I love ALL of them! Groopdealz is also having a HUGE discount right now on 36 styles of blanket scarves! #score

Have a great weekend!

Fashion Friday: Bordeaux Drape Front Jacket For Fall

All smiles here today as the kids headed off to school this week and we're getting back into a good routine! The weather is turning crisp here in the Seattle area and I'm turning toward beautiful fall colors like bordeaux, olive green, burnt orange, etc.

These drape front style jackets are flattering on most people since they have nice angles to them and don't require buttoning or zipping.

In this outfit, I paired the leather jacket with my go-to tunic and neutral fall ankle booties from the Nsale.  This definitely makes me feel chic and put together, but still able to run around as a mama of three!

Coastal Collective Kids: Back to School Ideas

FashionAnneke McConnell

Hello friends! With summer in full swing, it's hard to even think of back to school, but I made a deal. My oldest daughter approached me awhile back about starting her own business. Ahem.....you know.....like mommy? Lol ;-)  After much persistence from her about this "business stuff", I asked her if she'd be interested in working with me on a kids segment for the new blog, to which she replied an enthusiastic YES!

With the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in full swing, it was the perfect opportunity for her to share some ideas she had and get some back to school shopping done.  These deals are crazy you guys! I picked a few ideas and said no to some others, but for the most part these are her own picks. She's not fussy about fashion, but she is particular about how she pairs things for certain occasions and not when she's not off playing on the beach or climbing trees.  I'd like to introduce you to my beautiful, sweet, smart daughter Annabelle.

Yup! Holding our sweet little malitjpoo puppy Copper!   I haven't even introduced him really, but he is turning out to be the absolutely sweetest pup ever with just a bit of sass and spunk - perfect for us!!

So today's post is focusing on back to school fashion and hopefully in a way that can help you choose pieces for your kiddos that will last and are transitional in between the seasons.  We were looking for well fitting jeans [I'm SO impressed with the fit on these!], under tanks, warm cardigans for layering, comfortable booties, boots, and flats, and then I let Annabelle pick out one item on her own that was a really BIG deal to her. She feels so grown up - it's too cute. I hope you enjoy the outfits we've put together and future Coastal Collective Kids posts - if so, please share.  It will make her day I'm sure!!  Thanks!

There are so many great items to choose from for your kid's back to school clothes in this sale. Here are a handful of some other favorites we found.  Jeans, sweaters, jackets, shoes, tops, you name it.  Some of these we bought for my other daughter too!

Ok, and if there is ONE thing from this entire amazing sale that I could pick that you should get for your daughter, niece, mom, friend, sister, teacher, etc., it has got to be THIS necklace. I'm serious....stock up now for birthdays, Christmas, wedding showers, and more. It's the perfect mix between a statement necklace and a delicate necklace - just the right touch of sparkle! For under $40 during this sale, it's a beautiful steal.

My boxes of goodies from Nordstrom just arrived in the mail yesterday, so I'll be sharing more on sizing and whatnot in an upcoming post or two, but overall I'm super happy with what I was able to find. I will say that I tend to buy sweaters larger because I love the oversize fit, and almost every sweater I bought I ordered up a size and could have just ordered my regular size.  I'm debating exchanging them so I hope they aren't sold out! Am I the only one who wears an XS to XL around here? Lol  The fit of items is all personal in my opinion. ;-)  I've link up my big girl, Pacific Northwest stay at home mom, work at home mom picks below - photos coming soon! Happy shopping you guys!!

Anneke
