Favorites of 2019

Anneke McConnell

Like many of us, 2019 brought a lot of change, a lot of ups, downs, and in betweens. We tackled a few projects around the Beach House and made some pretty big decisions for our family. More on that soon as I kept pretty low key about most of it as we were navigating life.

What I CAN say, is that because we made the leap with some of those decisions and kicked fear to the curb, we are in a MUCH better place today and LOVING LIFE!. I don’t say that to braggy, but hopefully encourage you that there is so much power in the decisions you make for your life and you don’t have to feel “stuck”.

That leads me straight into my Favorite Items of 2019!

  1. Favorite Book.

The first half of the year, I had hours of time in the car and spent A LOT of time listening to business and personal development podcasts every day. Through one of these, I was introduced to what became one of my favorite books of the year, Atomic Habits by James Clear. I actually listened to it as an audiobook, because….well, the excessive driving. It’s on my list of books to to revisit in 2020. What I love about it is that it is clear, concise, engaging, and actionable. This book has the power to change your life and has much more depth to it than other books on the topic. A MUST READ!!

2. Favorite Home Items.

Since so much of what I blog about has to do with home decorating, this was a tough one to narrow down. We made a lot of functional upgrades this past year, but I’d have to say my favorite items revolve around updating mine and Michael’s master bedroom in the Spring. After going through some major low points as a couple and finally being on the upside, it meant a lot to me to put other projects on the back burner and give some deserved attention to make our room a retreat from the daily stresses of life.

Beach House Master Bedroom

It was my partnership with Serena & Lily at the time that really brought the finishing touches to the room, and I’m so thankful now for the timing of that. I love that the company values that living well begins at home, at the core of everyday. It truly does! While we incorporated quite a few items into the bedroom, the linen bedding (in white), linen quilt (in Pink Sand), and round seagrass tray were my favorite. I LOVE that tray so much!! I’ve used it all around our house, inside and out. :-) I'll link other items from the makeover below.

Round Seagrass Tray

As we head into the new year, we have some bigger renovation ideas in the works at the Beach House involving the kids bedrooms. We laugh that this has been the home of “musical rooms” (versus “musical chairs”), but it’s so true. All of us have been in every room of the upper level!

The girls currently share a bedroom and Bubba’s bedroom is just through their bedroom. It seems as if the original floor plan was designed to be a small living room with an adjacent office or similar, but as a family of five we’ve made it work! We’re brainstorming how to reconfigure the upper level of the home into proper bedrooms and once we do, I’m planning to use Serena & Lily bedding and pillows for the kids. :-)

3. Favorite Trip.

Travel is definitely on my bucket list as the kids are getting older! We made it with the family to Maui for my husband’s 40th birthday,, but it was our local(ish) anniversary trip last June that was my favorite of 2019!

Michael surprised me with a trip to Snug Harbor Resort and Marina in Friday Harbor while the kids stayed home with Grandma. It was just such a relaxing trip and the most beautiful time of year hear in the Seattle area.

We had purchased and received our new Hewescraft boat just a few months before (one of our major decisions 2019!) and Michael was excited to test out boating to a grand adventure in the Puget Sound. It was so much fun!

The cabins are perfectly Pacific Northwest coastal style, cozy, comfortable, and quiet. We’d wake up and have a nice “home-cooked” breakfast before heading out in the boat for the day to explore the local islands. I’m hoping we can revisit Snug Harbor again and again over the years.

I think the kids would love it too!

Linen Pajamas with Serena & Lily

Fashion, PajamasAnneke McConnell

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks around the beach house with puppy snuggles as we introduced Autumn to our family! While it’s been lacking in sleep and involving a lot of extra time for training her, our hearts are full and we’re happy to be kicking off 2020 on a high note as this hasn’t been the case in recent years with health and relationship struggles. We truly appreciate your love and support over the years. :-)

The LOOK on Annabelle’s face says it all!!!

Miniature Golden Retriever Puppy

As a Serena & Lily partner, I’m honored to introduce you to their beautiful linen pajamas - did you know they have pajamas?!! And they are just as comfortable, relaxed, and soft as their linen bedding we purchased for our Master Bedroom last spring.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit it, but I never knew what the big deal was about linen until I experienced it firsthand for myself. They are incredibly luxurious, comfortable, and the kind of lounge wear you’d want to find yourself in on a lazy Saturday morning.

They have this magical ability keep you warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s hot.

Pink Linen Pajamas

Annabelle is wearing the Positano Linen Pajamas in Wild Rose. They are also available in the beautiful lighter colors Eucalyptus, Vintage Indigo, and French Blue. These pajamas are beautifully woven in Portugal from eco-friendly European linen and get softer with every wash.

Morning Reading with Linen Pajamas

Annabelle is a major bookworm and is often found in one of these two spots in our main living and dining area…..either the breakfast table or the settee. I suppose it depends on if one of the pups is begging to snuggle or if she’s enjoying some hot cocoa or tea. :-) Every since we added this alpaca blanket to our home, it’s been her go-to blanket since it’s not bulky, but incredibly warm.

Breakfast Table Beach House

Below you can see more of the storm boards and ladder to the beach. October through April is the time of year when we have to install the storm boards to block the high tides and windstorms. It’s a bummer it blocks the view a bit and we have use that crazy ladder to get down onto the beach, but I’ll take it! It may not be the prettiest, but someone smack me if I ever sound like I’m not grateful for every inch of this quirky beach house! Lol

This is probably one of our favorite seats in the house. Ha! I’m actually sitting here right now!

Girls' Shared Bedroom Progress - The Rug is HERE!

Girl's Beach House Bedroom Before and After

*this post contains affiliate links.

Changing up your rug can have a pretty BIG impact on a space. It typically grounds the room and can be a jumping off point for the color palette in your design. I recently updated our girl’s shared bedroom as a partner in design with Serena & Lily, brightening the bedroom with their beautiful blue and cream Amelia Rug.

It’s been fun to talk with our girls who are getting older now (hello teen years!) about what they like in design, so they definitely had a hand in picking out a rug for their bedroom. That can be tricky too because they both have different tastes!

A lot of items in their room have been a mishmash as we’ve been playing “musical rooms” since we moved in, trying to make the most of the awkward design and layout.

Now that no one is changing rooms until we officially renovate (hopefully sooner than later!), we’re ready to add some more personal touches and incorporate some big girl design.

We started with a rug in their room that was way too small at just a 5’ x 8’. It was originally purchased for our entryway and then ended up being a bit too thick for the door clearance.

This new rug is an 8’ x 10’ and now fills up most of the bedroom, and drastically brightens it up.

I knew that the rug would be beautiful, but I was actually shocked at the difference. Take a look at the before and after!

From the moment the Amelia Rug arrived you could immediately see and feel the different in the quality which Serena and Lily is well known for. We had the same experience when we received the Tulum Rug for our Master Bedroom (that rug is PERFECT alone or for layering and made of hemp and cotton).

Our maltipoo Copper approves! Most days he keeps watch staring out the window from our oldest bed. :-)

Since most of Serena & Lily’s decor coordinates, we were able to pull other items from around our house like the Avery Alpaca Throw, their light blue Topanga Pillow Cover, the Suede Eva Pillow Cover, and Cavallo Linen Duvet Cover. Here you can see a close up of the rug and the beautiful blues, cream, and gray pattern which is made from hand-knotted wool.

If you’ve ever wondered how you can breathe new life into any room of your home, our girl’s bedroom progress proves that switching out your rug can make a HUGE impact. We still need to add some shiplap to the walls, a wall sconce, and a few more items, but overall we’re all really happy with how it’s coming together!

Seagrass and Wicker Natural Trays

Home Decor, RoundupAnneke McConnell

It’s hard not to love the beauty and functionality of a good tray. They are perfect for serving up breakfast in bed and corralling like items on a coffee table, entryway table, dresser, etc. They make a beautiful centerpiece to display floral arrangements, candles and seasonal decor (like our current table display with mini pumpkins!), or even use in a bathroom for and towels and more.

Round Seagrass Tray with Seasonal Decor and Candles

Round Sandbar Tray

Lending to a more coastal or farmhouse vibe, a tray made of natural materials such as seagrass, wicker, rattan, bamboo, etc. offers the addition of a soft and casual texture to a space unlike a stone or wood tray. Here’s a round up of my favorites that are easy to shop online. These trays come in at various price points, but the majority are great quality, budget friendly, and work in almost any home!
