My Top 3 Blogging and Small Biz Mistakes

Blogging, How to Blog, Business DevelopmentAnneke McConnell

When I first began blogging over 5 years ago, I had no idea what I was getting into as I started a blog on blogger (don't do that by the way!)  I knew that I loved refinishing furniture and people wanted to know how I did that. Of course I wanted to help!

Now all these years later, I LOVE helping people avoid my (many) mistakes and get set up the right way.

So how can you get set up and start a blog or use blogging for business in a way that actually supports your entrepreneurial work for yourself dreams?

Glad you asked!

1. I had no long term vision.

When I began blogging so many years ago, I literally just said, "Hmmm.....maybe I should start a blog."  And I did.

No planning. No focus. No goals. No clue even how to blog.  I just wanted to share what I knew with people, but never accounted for the amount of time it would take, the expenses that would incur, or how it would affect future goals and my family life.

THANKFULLY, I figured it out and am able to stay home with our kids and bring in an income doing what I love and helping people!

If you want to start a blog and share your ideas with the world, or have a small business and need to incorporate blogging to reach your ideal clients and customers (yes, you NEED to blog as a business owner!), it is possible to make it work!

BUT.....you need a plan and vision.

2. I didn't have a clear voice.

Here's what I mean. I knew what I loved to do and what I could share with people, but I never took the time to figure out how to connect that to the people I wanted to help!

One of the most POWERFUL things I did was to figure out my voice for my blog and business.  The impact was almost immediate and my earnings quadrupled.  Now that wasn't a scientific experiment or anything, but it has played a HUGE role in my success.

Plus, I get to work with and help super fun people like YOU! ;-)

3. I was doing TOO much!

Oh my. I could talk forever about this one.  I gave up on "lifestyle blogging" because I realized it didn't fit with my long term vision and I was trying to do waaayyyyyyy too much.

Now I share about design and style (and blogging).

I say no to A LOT.

I delegate wherever possible, because I can't do it all and do it well.

I am now able to focus on doing what only I can do and love and let go of the rest!

Now what about you? Do you want to start a blog?  Are you a small business owner needing help to get your blog off the ground?

I would love to help you!

Blogging has certainly been a blessing to our family and allowed me to be home with my kids, so if I can help others out there learn more and achieve their dreams, I'm all in!

Coastal Interiors: Modern Vintage Living Room

Coastal Interiors, Summer, Spring, Home Blog Posts, Interiors, Living Room, EdesignAnneke McConnell

Thanks for the social love and pins from my last post guys! It can be a little daunting to put yourself out there, and I'm so thankful for your support!! xoxo

As for today's design, I love a good mix of modern clean lines, a uncluttered but collected space, and definitely a beach vibe!  Incorporating inky blues, indigo, palm leaf green, etc. with pops of warm colors, gray and tan are my tendencies in design.

I fell in love with that navy brushstroke pillow (and more colors!) at first site and have always been a sucker for palm leaf ANYTHING like this pillow.

Using a clear coffee table and sofa you can see underneath really just visually lightens the feel of a room. I love the sofa in this design for that very reason!

The navy striped rug is a vintage find, so at the time of this post there is only one available.  Adding home decor with history and quality like this really adds life to a room - whether it's found online, passed down in the family, or found at an estate sale!

Then how FUN is that gold starburst pendant!!!  Lighting has such an amazing way of pulling an entire room together - one of my most popular post is on lighting which you can find HERE!

We are also ALL about versatility around here at Coastal Collective Co., and garden stools definitely fit the bill for that!! They are incredibly easy to move around, can be used inside or outside AND as a seat, footstool, or side table. We personally have a few and LOVE them!  I think the subtle variation in colors in this one in today's design are gorgeous!

With lazy, warm summer days not too far off (no, I didn't forget Spring!), I am loving EVERY item in this collection above!!!  Swing porches, garden stools, outdoor pillows galore. It's all gorgeous and inviting, not to mention comfortable for a night with friends and good food....and hopefully great conversation. ;-)

And to top it off with a few weekend faves. Clearly I have sunshine and warmer days on my mind!

Using a Coat to Make a Basic Outfit Look Chic and Pulled Together

Fashion Blog Posts, SpringAnneke McConnell

It's no secret that I play the casual game here in the Pacific Northwest region as a stay at home/ work at home mom.  Yes.....I'm ALL about heels and dressing up too!

When it comes to the day to day and I'm wearing a casual look, I have a small arsenal of coats and jackets that I can easily throw on to look more "put together" when going out - even for a quick trip for a lunch date or the grocery store.

I can easily go from the above look, throw on a jacket (one of MANY), and go to the look below.

As for outfit details, the creamy lace top is my new go-to for casual days with the kiddos and those sandals are going to be on the repeat! They are pretty comfortable! The everyday trench coat is a little larger than normal, so I'd suggest sizing down. ;-) It's a nice piece for layering as we get closer to Spring!

Another example of going from basic to more chic is when I wear classic distressed denim and a white button up shirt, then when I head out, I throw on this coat for a pop of subtle color, pattern, and texture. Sounds like the designer in me!

I LOVE the zipper detail on this coat! It makes it easy to put on gloves and stay warm. ;-)

As for this outfit's details, the blue plaid coat fit perfectly and felt very comfortable to move in and true to size. The white collared shirt ran very large - it's a boyfriend shirt, so I should have caught on to that! And yes, the black handbag is my go to basic black bag and roomy enough for all the essentials.

Ok, last quick comparison! Sometimes choosing a contrasting coat in a neutral is all you need.

All I did here was add a coat! I swear by it!!  Again, the same bag and sandals.  And I love how these black distressed denim jeans fit - it's a struggle to find the right fit for me online, but these fit first try and are true to size. Yes....I'll be checking for a white pair. ;-)
